
Mam Ibraheem, MD, MPH, is a neurologist, epidemiologist, author, and faculty member at Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School. For more than two decades, his work has been shaped by caring for thousands of patients, teaching and learning from colleagues and trainees, and studying how people and healthcare systems respond to uncertainty, change, and difficult decisions. His interests include clinical medicine, neurology, public health, managerial epidemiology, neuroepidemiology, narrative medicine, organizational psychology, healthcare leadership, and the evolving role of artificial intelligence in medicine.
A former U.S. CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer and Disease Detective and a Fulbright Scholar Ambassador, Dr. Ibraheem has worked across clinical, academic, private, and public health settings. His academic work includes Applied Neurotoxicology, published by Elsevier as part of Neurologic Clinics, which he co-edited and co-authored in collaboration with more than 75 scholars and experts from the United States and around the world. Designed as a practical clinical resource, the volume connects causal reasoning with the recognition and management of neurotoxic syndromes encountered in contemporary medicine.
Dr. Ibraheem is the author of the three-book series The Human Architecture of Healthcare Leadership, which explores the individual, team, leadership, and organizational dimensions of modern healthcare, including the growing influence of artificial intelligence. He is also the author of From Baghdad to Boston — The Trilogy of the Human Physician, which draws on fiction, memoir, literary reflection, and the medical humanities to explore medicine, identity, belonging, and the experience of becoming a physician across cultures.
Across his writing, Dr. Ibraheem returns to a question that has followed him throughout his career: how medicine can continue to advance while remaining deeply human. His books bring together lessons from patients, colleagues, institutions, different cultures, and more than two decades within medicine, written for those who practice it, lead it, study it, and care about its future.

Mam Ibraheem, MD, MPH, is a neurologist, epidemiologist, author, and faculty member at Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School. More than two decades after graduating from medical school, his work has spanned clinical medicine, public health, medical education, healthcare systems, narrative medicine, and, increasingly, artificial intelligence in healthcare.
His books grew gradually from those years rather than from a separate literary career. His first collection, From Baghdad to Boston — The Trilogy of the Human Physician, was nearly twenty years in the making, shaped by the experience of caring for thousands of patients over two decades, as well as extensive reading, travel, reflection, and life across different cultures and healthcare systems. The trilogy considers medicine not only as a profession, but also as a deeply human experience shaped by the lives and stories of patients, as well as by identity, ethics, belonging, uncertainty, and time.
The Physician as Reader: 100 Literary Windows into Leadership, Ethics, and Humanity in Medicine brings literature into conversation with clinical work and the human questions physicians encounter. Architecture of Belonging: A Neurologist’s European Journey Through Emotion, Innovation, and Leadership combines travel with reflections on medicine, identity, belonging, and professional life. The Architect of Light: From Baghdad to Boston: A Novel turns to fiction to explore a physician's journey across countries, histories, relationships, and changing ideas of home.
His second three-book project, The Human Architecture of Healthcare Leadership, developed over more than five years of study, clinical and organizational experience, executive education, reflection, and writing. It examines healthcare leadership during a period of rapid change and disruption, shaped by the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the growing influence of artificial intelligence, financial pressures, workforce instability, fragmented care, and increasing organizational complexity.
The series follows the progression from the individual clinician to clinical teams and healthcare systems. Book I, Leading Self in Medicine, examines the inner psychology of clinical work, including self-awareness, character, judgment, and resilience. Book II, Leading Teams in Medicine, focuses on organizational psychology, communication, trust, accountability, conflict, and effective clinical teamwork. Book III, Leading Systems in Medicine, addresses systems thinking, organizational design, healthcare strategy, the business of medicine, decision-making, and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence.
Underlying the series is a perspective that became clearer over more than twenty years in medicine: clinical expertise remains fundamental, but clinicians now work within increasingly complex human, organizational, financial, and technological environments. Understanding those environments has become an important part of caring for patients, working with colleagues, and improving healthcare.
Dr. Ibraheem is a former Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer and Disease Detective with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a Fulbright Scholar Ambassador. He later served as a Healthcare System Integration Scholar in New York City, Alternate Chief of Neurology Services at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and academic faculty in neurology and epidemiology at the University of Kentucky. His career has also included private and community-based medicine. These experiences exposed him to medicine from different vantage points and continue to inform his writing.
His academic work includes Applied Neurotoxicology, an issue of Elsevier’s Neurologic Clinics, which he co-edited and co-authored in collaboration with more than 75 scholars and experts from across the United States and around the world. Designed as a practical clinical resource, the volume connects causal reasoning with the recognition and management of neurotoxic syndromes encountered in contemporary medicine. It addresses disorders affecting the peripheral and central nervous systems, including neuropathies, neuromuscular disorders, delirium, encephalopathy, coma, cerebellar syndromes, parkinsonism, and seizures.
The volume also explores evolving areas of clinical relevance, including neurochemical and neurobiological weapons, women's and fetal neurotoxicology, manganese exposure, medication-related neurologic toxicity, complications of CAR T-cell immunotherapy, toxic effects on smell and taste, and neurologic syndromes associated with drugs of abuse. Its emphasis on clinical approach, causal inference, emerging therapies, and changing exposures reflects neurotoxicology as an active and evolving part of modern neurological practice.
Dr. Ibraheem's broader interests include neurology, epidemiology, public health, narrative medicine, organizational psychology, healthcare strategy, managerial epidemiology, systems thinking, and artificial intelligence. He has pursued executive education in artificial intelligence and healthcare through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is particularly interested in how emerging technologies can improve clinical intelligence, access, quality, and healthcare delivery while preserving sound clinical judgment and the human relationship at the center of medicine.
Looking toward the future and reflecting his longstanding interest in global health and his Kurdish American heritage, Dr. Ibraheem is developing IBRAIN — Ibraheem Brain & Rehabilitation Institute for Advanced Neuromedicine — as an independent initiative envisioned for Erbil (Hawler), the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Planned as a future Center of Excellence, IBRAIN seeks to connect experience in U.S. medicine with regional opportunities and innovation in the Middle East in neuroscience, rehabilitation, education, technology, and clinical capacity-building. Envisioned for launch in 2028, the initiative reflects his interest in strengthening connections between U.S. and Middle Eastern medicine while contributing to the region of his heritage. IBRAIN is independent of his academic and hospital affiliations.
Across his medical, academic, and literary writing, Dr. Ibraheem remains interested in questions that have followed him throughout his career: how physicians change over a lifetime, how people work together when circumstances are difficult, how healthcare institutions make consequential decisions, and how scientific and technological progress can improve medicine without diminishing its human character.
A personal philosophy that has accompanied his work is:

He also draws meaning from the ancient Zoroastrian principle, “Good Thoughts | Good Words | Good Deeds,” and from its enduring reminder that knowledge and scientific progress carry a human responsibility. In his writing, this is expressed through a simple belief that science is most meaningful when it remains connected to humanity.
He writes for physicians and other clinicians, residents and fellows, advanced practice providers, healthcare executives and leaders, educators, students, and general readers interested in medicine, the people who practice it, and the systems that shape it. He lives and works in the Boston area.
